In recent decades, naturally growing mosses have been used successfully as biomonitors of atmospheric deposition of heavy metals and nitrogen. Since 1990, the European moss survey has been repeated at five-yearly intervals. In 2010, the lowest concentrations of metals and nitrogen in mosses were generally found in northern Europe, whereas the highest concentrations were observed in (south-)eastern Europe for metals and the central belt for nitrogen. Averaged across Europe, since 1990, the median concentration in mosses has declined the most for lead (77%), followed by vanadium (55%), cadmium (51%), chromium (43%), zinc (34%), nickel (33%), iron (27%), arsenic (21%, since 1995), mercury (14%, since 1995) and copper (11%). Between 2005 and 2010, the decline ranged from 6% for copper to 36% for lead; for nitrogen the decline was 5%. Despite the Europe-wide decline, no changes or increases have been observed between 2005 and 2010 in some (regions of) countries.

Previous analyses at the European scale have shown that cadmium and lead concentrations in mosses are primarily determined by the total deposition of these metals. Further analyses in the current study show that Spearman rank correlations between the concentration in mosses and the deposition modelled by the European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme (EMEP) are country and metal-specific. Significant positive correlations were found for about two thirds or more of the participating countries in 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005 (except for Cd in 1990). Correlations were often not significant and sometimes negative in countries where mosses were only sampled in a relatively small number of EMEP grids. Correlations frequently improved when only data for EMEP grids with at least three moss sampling sites per grid were included. It was concluded that spatial patterns and temporal trends agree reasonably well between lead and cadmium concentrations in mosses and modelled atmospheric deposition.

In recent decades, mosses have been used successfully as biomonitors of atmospheric deposition of heavy metals. Since 1990, the European moss survey has been repeated at five-yearly intervals. Although spatial patterns were metal-specific, in 2005 the lowest concentrations of metals in mosses were generally found in Scandinavia, the Baltic States and northern parts of the UK; the highest concentrations were generally found in Belgium and south-eastern Europe. The recent decline in emission and subsequent deposition of heavy metals across Europe has resulted in a decrease in the heavy metal concentration in mosses for the majority of metals. Since 1990, the concentration in mosses has declined the most for arsenic, cadmium, iron, lead and vanadium (52-72%), followed by copper, nickel and zinc (20-30%), with no significant reduction being observed for mercury (12% since 1995) and chromium (2%). However, temporal trends were country-specific with sometimes increases being found.

A comparative study of the capabilities of black poplar-tree (Populus nigra L.) bark as a biomonitor of atmospheric heavy-metal pollution is reported. Performance indicators (concentrations and enrichment factors) of heavy metal bioaccumulation of bark were compared to the corresponding indicators of epiphytic lichens Xanthoria parietina (L.) Th. Fr. and Physcia adscendens (Fr.) H. Oliver, collected simultaneously with bark samples within the Kiev urban-industrial conurbation. The concentrations of 40 minor and trace elements in the samples were measured by a combination of epithermal and instrumental neutron activation analysis (NAA) using a 10 MW nuclear research reactor WWR-M as the neutron source. Statistical analysis of the data was carried out using non-parametric tests. It was shown that for the majority of the elements determined a good correlation exists between their concentrations in bark and in the lichen species. The accumulation capability of the bark was found to be as effective as, and in some cases better, for both types of lichens. Based on the background levels and variations of the elemental concentration in black poplar-tree bark, threshold values for the enrichment factors were established. For a number of elements (As, Au, Ce, Co, Cr, Cu, La, Mn, Mo, Ni, Sb, Sm, Ti, Th, U, V, W) an interspecies calibration was performed. An optimized pre-irradiation treatment of the bark sample was employed which efficiently separated the most informative external layer from the deeper layers of the bark and thus minimized variations of the element concentrations. Results of this study support black poplar-tree bark as an alternative to epiphytic lichens for heavy metal air pollution monitoring in urban and industrial regions, where severe environmental conditions may result in scarcity or even lack of the indicator species.

Ozone (O3) concentrations were monitored during the 1997-1999 growing seasons in 32 forest sites of the Carpathian Mountains. At all sites (elevation between 450 and 1320 m) concentrations of O3, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and sulfur dioxide (SO2) were measured with passive samplers. In addition, in two western Carpathian locations, Vychodna and Gubalówka, ozone was continuously monitored with ultraviolet (UV) absorption monitors. Highest average hourly O3 concentrations in the Vychodna and Gubalówka sites reached 160 and 200 microg/m3 (82 and 102 ppb), respectively (except for the AOT40 values, ozone concentrations are presented as microg/m3; and at 25 degrees C and 760 mm Hg, 1 microg O3/m3 = 0.51 ppb O3). These sites showed drastically different patterns of diurnal 03 distribution, one with clearly defined peaks in the afternoon and lowest values in the morning, the other with flat patterns during the entire 24-h period. On two elevational transects, no effect of elevation on O3 levels was seen on the first one, while on the other a significant increase of O3 levels with elevation occurred. Concentrations of O3 determined with passive samplers were significantly different between individual monitoring years, monitoring periods, and geographic location of the monitoring sites. Results of passive sampler monitoring showed that high O3 concentrations could be expected in many parts of the Carpathian range, especially in its western part, but also in the eastern and southern ranges. More than four-fold denser network of monitoring sites is required for reliable estimates of O3 distribution in forests over the entire Carpathian range (140 points). Potential phytotoxic effects of O3 on forest trees and understory vegetation are expected on almost the entire territory of the Carpathian Mountains. This assumption is based on estimates of the AOT40 indices for forest trees and natural vegetation. Concentrations of NO2 and SO2 in the entire Carpathian range were typical for this part of Europe and below the expected levels of phytotoxicity.

Reaction of the Schiff-base complex [Co(acetylacetonate-ethylenediimine)(NH3)2]+ with metmyoglobin at pH 6.5 yields a partially folded protein containing six Co(III) complexes. Although half of its alpha-helical secondary structure is retained, absorption and CD spectra indicate that the tertiary structure in both B-F and AGH domains is disrupted in the partially folded protein. In analogy to proton-induced unfolding, it is likely that the loss of tertiary structure is triggered by metal-ion binding to histidines. Cobalt(III)-induced unfolding of myoglobin is unique in its selectivity (other proteins are unaffected) and in allowing the isolation of the partially folded macromolecule (the protein does not refold or aggregate upon removal of free denaturant).

The effects of gonadal hormones, testosterone (Te) and estrogen (E2) as factors in the development of the immune system in two lines, high response (HC) and low response (LC), of broiler chickens divergently selected for early or late immune maturation were studied. For this purpose, plasma Te and E2 levels were tested and correlated with immune response. Also, the effects of exogenous administration of gonadal steroids testosterone propionate (TP), dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and estradiol 3-benzoate (EB), and the nonsteroidal androgen antagonist flutomide (Flu) and anti-estrogen tamoxifen (Tam) on the immune system were studied. Male chicks of the LC line had a higher level of endogenous Te during first 30 d posthatch. The administration of TP or DHT had no noticeable effect on the humoral immune response, whereas DHT suppressed growth of the bursa of Fabricius of both sexes of HC line. No differences in the endogenous E2 level were observed between sexes in either line. Administration of EB inhibited comb and testicle growth and enhanced significantly the humoral immune response to Escherichia coli and sheep erythrocytes (SRBC). The anti-androgen Flu and anti-estrogen Tam strongly inhibited humoral immune response to E. coli and SRBC antigen, whereas no effects on comb and testicle growth were observed. The experimental results suggest that gonadal hormones have similar principal posthatch effects in avian as in mammals; however, the gonadal steroids prehatch effects and the genetic-physiological-environmental effects require further study.

This study was undertaken to investigate whether bovine granulosa and theca interna cells could be luteinized in vitro into luteal-like cells. Granulosa and theca cells were cultured for 9 days in the presence of forskolin (10 microM), insulin (2 micrograms/ml), insulin-like growth factor I (100 ng/ml), or a combination of these agents. During the first day of culture, granulosa and theca cells secreted estradiol and androstenedione, respectively; progesterone rose only after 3-5 days in culture and reached a maximum on the ninth day of culture. Cells incubated in the presence of forskolin plus insulin exhibited morphological and functional characteristics of luteal cells isolated from the corpus luteum. It was found that cell diameter, basal and stimulated progesterone secretion, and pattern of cell replication for both cell types were comparable to those of luteal cells. Numerous lipid droplets and intensified mitochondrial adrenodoxin staining also indicated active steroidogenesis in luteinized cells. After 9 days in culture, stimulants were withdrawn, and the culture proceeded in basal medium for an additional 5 days; elevated progesterone levels were maintained by luteinized granulosa cells (LGC), whereas in contrast a dramatic drop in progesterone production was observed in luteinized theca cells (LTC). On Day 9, cells were challenged for 3 h with LH (10 ng/ml), forskolin (10 microM), or cholera toxin (100 ng/ml), resulting in a 4-fold increase in progesterone secretion by LTC; the same treatments failed to stimulate progesterone in LGC.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
